Bubblegum Crucifix Award # 5

It’s often hard these days to decide whether a particular tacky and idiotic utterance should be pegged as being of religious intent or political intent, since there is such heavy overlap. The following fills both bills. It comes from a state representative in Texas who, rather than try to fulfill the duties of his role as outlined in the constitutions of the state and the nation, has his own ideas about the priorities of his position:

It’s our job to push the needle and move the Overton Window more towards our biblical, Bible-centered Christian values. — Nate Schatzline

Christian values that are not only Christian but biblical and even Bible-centered.

  1. First of all America is not a Christian country, it’s a country with many Christians, and since when has anyone been forced to keep their children away from the churches that they normally attend?

Besides, we are not moving away from Bible centered Christian values just because our country values the religious beliefs of everyone and stipulates that they cannot be controlled by the state, and that the States will not be controlled by them. What public schools have been doing is respecting the beliefs of a diverse number of students, who already receive a large part of their Christian beliefs from their parents and their churches.

Might I ask any devout Catholics if they would be dismayed if Buddha’s 5 noble truths were required to be displayed in each classroom, Or, if students with Hindu backgrounds were forced to recite Christian prayers? The fact is that no religion is prohibited from letting its adherents pray on school grounds–they are just not allowed to (organize) any (group) of students on school grounds in order follow Christian beliefs or that affirm the beliefs of any other religions! Do those who support religious freedom really want their children to be influenced by Muslim beliefs, or the beliefs of any other world religion. If there are many young people who are no longer practicing Christians, it could be in reaction to dogmatic religious and political authorities who want to alter the structure of our government so that it adhere only to Lutherans, or Presbyterians, or other Christian denominations who all have a different view than Catholics, or Buddhists, about the ways that religious rituals must be observed if they truly represent the wishes of Jesus–in addition to the services and teaching of manu various faiths should rather be handled by adhering to the principal of equality.

The essence of this problem has nothing to do with who is right or wrong, it is simply intended not to cast religious beliefs of any kinds from other faiths, as if they, and only they, are one faith that the government recognizes as true. Parents can decide that question of course, but not the government!

The prevalence of religious dogmas and their attempts to deny the truths in many other religions may be the primary reason that young people are rebelling against any dogmatic control over many them faiths–and which might represent the largest source spiritual dissatisfaction today. Because many young and middle aged people lose interest in organized religions merely because many faiths wants to indoctrinate rather than circulate the love of Christ!

  2. POP, I must add that reading many of your articles made aware of facts that I had not considered before.
